FAIR USE: The use of copyrighted material for your project falls under the Fair Use doctrine, which identifies educational use for non-commercial purposes as acceptable with certain limitations. You should not place your project in a non-academic public setting, such as a commercial Internet site, without obtaining permission from the copyright owner. Read more here.
PLAGIARISM: Presenting the work or ideas of others in ways that give the impression that they are your own (copying information word-for-word without using both quotations and citations, paraphrasing an author’s ideas without proper attribution, or using visuals or music without giving proper credit). Plagiarism in any form will result in disqualification from the contest. Not sure if you cited everything correctly? Check out this helpful guide.
RULE INFRACTION: A violation of any of the rules stated in this Contest Rule Book. Judges will take any rule infractions into consideration in their final rankings. Failure to comply with the rules will count against your entry but will only result in disqualification as delineated below. Any rule infractions should be corrected before a winning entry competes in the next level of competition.
DISQUALIFICATION: Removal of an entry from competition. A project may be disqualified from the contest on three grounds:
1. Plagiarizing all or part of the NHD project. Please note that failing to give proper credit is plagiarism.
2. Reusing, individually or as a group, a project (or research from a project) from a previous year, or entering a project in multiple contests or entry categories within a contest year.
3. Tampering with any part of the project of another student.
Maryland History Day
Where else could 27,000 students have so much fun, they forget how much they’re learning?
Influencing the future through discovering the past.
For middle and high school students who participate, Maryland History Day sparks critical thinking, and helps develop skills in research and analysis, writing, and public speaking.
Working solo or in small groups, students create original documentaries, exhibits, performances, research papers or websites exploring a breadth of historical topics within an annual theme. Students progress through competitions at the school, district, state, and national levels. Students from public, private, home and cyber schools are welcome to participate.

At the State Contest all performance, documentary, and website judging is open to the public, however we ask that all audience members be respectful of the judging process and the hard work of the students.
There will be a time for public viewing of exhibits between judging rounds. The exact timing will be announced the day of the competition.
Maryland History Day Contest Schedule

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Judging
Paper and Exhibit judging is closed to everyone except judges and the students being judged. Parents, teachers, and friends are welcome to view the Documentary, Performance, and Website presentations during judging.
Runoff participants and times will be posted on the first floor of University Center, across from the elevators, at approximately 1:00 PM for the following categories:

Students in these categories need to check the posting and must be at the assigned room at the appropriate time to present their documentaries and performances. Students in Paper, Exhibit, and Website runoffs will not be present for runoff judging.

Our goal is to encourage kids to keep learning by providing constructive feedback in a positive environment.
- Evaluations: Evaluations should be based on the quality of the work, and most importantly on the historical quality. Evaluation criteria include Historical Quality (60%), Clarity of Presentation (20%), and Relation to Theme (20%).
- Historical Quality: Entries should include analysis and interpretation of the topic. Consider whether the student goes beyond the “what, when, and where” to explore the “why” of the topic and the broader historical context. In addition to providing basic information about the topic, entries must draw conclusions about significance in history.
- Clarity of Presentation: Avoid being swayed by glitz. Evaluations should be based on the clarity and appropriateness of the style of the entry for its particular category. Remember that the message is most important; the medium is not the message. By the same token, do expect an effective and well-organized presentation. Remember, this section is worth only 20% of the total evaluation; historical quality is most important.
